Myoko week checklist
Five decisions before you book. Print it, save it as a PDF, or keep it open while you plan. Written for Australians doing Myoko Kogen this winter.
01 · Which base
Akakura Kanko vs Onsen — pick your village
- Akakura Kanko: Powder bowls, tree runs, and steep terrain. Main gondola, onsens mid-mountain. Walk to lifts from Kanko village accommodation. Resort comparison →
- Akakura Onsen: Family terrain, village dining, and beginner-friendly slopes. Easier for mixed-ability groups. More restaurants within walking distance. Compare resorts →
- Ikenotaira connection: These bases connect at the top via Ikenotaira. One all-resort pass covers all three, but villages are separate — you can't ski door-to-door.
02 · Getting there
Shinkansen to Nagano, then the local train
From Tokyo Station, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagano (about 1.5 hours), then the Shinano Railway Kita-Shinano Line to Myoko-Kōgen (about 45 minutes) and a bus or taxi to your lodge. A 7-day JR Pass rarely pays for Myoko alone, and it does not cover the local train. From the airports, the Mt Myoko Shuttle runs to Akakura and Ikenotaira.
03 · First night eat
Akakura Onsen or Kanko — book ahead for peak weeks
Stay close to your base on night one. Akakura Onsen has more restaurant variety; Akakura Kanko has fewer but decent options. Peak weeks (Christmas, New Year, Australian school holidays) fill up — book before you land. Filter by English menu availability.
04 · English ski school
Group vs private, kids vs adults
Several English ski schools operate in Myoko — each has different strengths. Decide group vs private lessons, and whether you need kids programs, before comparing schools. Book November at the latest for peak weeks. Some schools run out of slots by December.
05 · What to pack
Powder gear, and when to book
Myoko gets deep, consistent powder — 10+ meters per season. Pack for tree runs and cold days: fat skis or powder boards if you have them, face protection, and layers. Flights and accommodation for Aussie school holidays move from September. Leaving it to December means leftover rooms and lesson slots.
