Tokyo to Myoko Kogen
The most direct route is the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Joetsu-Myoko Station (approximately 2 hours), then a local bus or taxi to your accommodation. Total door-to-door time is typically 3–3.5 hours depending on connections.
Step by Step
1. Tokyo to Joetsu-Myoko
Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Joetsu-Myoko Station. Trains run hourly. Reserved seats recommended during peak season. Journey time: approximately 2 hours.
JR Pass holders: Covered on standard JR Pass.
2. Joetsu-Myoko to Your Village
Local bus services connect Joetsu-Myoko Station to Akakura Onsen, Akakura Kanko, and other villages. Buses are timed with shinkansen arrivals but can fill up. Book ahead if possible.
Taxi: Approximately 15–20 minutes to most villages. Reasonable if splitting the cost.
Alternative: Echigo-Yuzawa Route
Some travellers take the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa, then change to a local train or bus. This adds time but may offer more flexible schedules depending on your start point.
Rental Car
Driving from Tokyo takes approximately 4–5 hours via the Kan-Etsu Expressway. Winter driving in Niigata requires confidence with snow and chains or winter tyres. Car hire is available at Joetsu-Myoko Station if you prefer to pick up locally.
From Other Cities
- Nagano: Local train or bus, approximately 1.5–2 hours.
- Niigata City: Train or expressway bus, around 1.5 hours.
- Osaka/Kyoto: Best via Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu-Myoko or connect through Nagano. Plan for 4–5 hours total.
Booking Tips
Reserve shinkansen seats in advance during February and New Year holidays. Many accommodations offer shuttle services—ask when you book. Confirm the last bus time from Joetsu-Myoko if arriving late in the day.
